Understanding market movements

23 September 2026

InvestmentSuperannuationPerformance

On 12 September 2026, we made some important changes to help strengthen Child Care Super for the future by way of a successor fund transfer (SFT). We've sent all members a Significant Event Notice that explains the changes in detail.

You can find more information about the SFT here. You’ll continue to be a Child Care Super member while benefiting from lower overall fees for most members, a refreshed range of investment options and the strength of a larger super fund.

During the process of making these changes, some member-initiated transactions were temporarily unavailable. Normal account access and function has since been restored.

Market movements in September 2026

We’ve been contacted by several members who noticed market movements that happened during the SFT process. It’s completely understandable that seeing the impact of market movements during a period of change at your super fund could be concerning. Our team is always here to support and happy to talk about what is happening with members.

As a result of global and domestic share and bond market movements during September 2026 investments (broadly), including superannuation investments, decreased in value. This change in value would have occurred had there been no SFT. It is not a result of, or caused by, the transfer.

How market movements impact your super

Because super funds invest across global markets, movements overseas can influence returns here in Australia.

In the short term, global instability can:

But your super isn’t invested in just one region, one company or one event.

Child Care Super 's investment options are diversified across different asset classes (like shares, bonds and property) and across different regions. That diversification is designed to help manage risk and reduce the impact of any single market shock.

We also actively monitor markets and adjust portfolios when needed. While no fund is immune to ups and downs, careful portfolio construction plays an important role in navigating uncertain periods.

What should you consider when markets move down?

For most members, the answer is: stay focused on the long term.

History shows that reacting to short-term market movements – for example, switching investment options during a downturn – can lock in losses and make it harder to benefit from a recovery.

If you’re feeling unsure, it can help to:

And if you haven’t checked your balance in a while? It’s okay. Super is built to weather different market conditions over time.

Volatility is part of investing

Over the past 20 years, markets have experienced:

Each time, markets experienced sharp falls. And each time, over the long term, diversified investors saw markets recover.

That doesn’t mean downturns are comfortable. They aren’t.

But super is designed to be a long-term investment. For most Child Care Super members, retirement is still many years away. That long time horizon is one of your biggest advantages.

Short-term events – even dramatic ones – don’t automatically lead to long-term losses.
